The legacy of tony Gwynn Sr.

Major League Baseball (MLB) has had incredible hitters throughout its history. Every era has a handful of elite hitters. Few did it better than Tony Gwynn Sr. He played his entire career with the San Diego Padres (1982-2001).

Tony Gwynn Sr. made his MLB debut in 1982. In his first full season in 1984, he won the National League (NL) batting title, hitting .351. Gwynn Sr. finished 3rd in the NL MVP race. He helped lead the Padres to their first World Series appearance. They lost to the Detroit Tigers in 5 games.

Gwynn Sr. would have one of his best seasons in 1987. He led the NL in batting average at .370. Gwynn Sr. led the NL in hits with 218. He won 4 batting titles in the 1980s (1984, 1987-1989).

Gwynn Sr. had probably his best season in 1994. He was in pursuit of hitting .400, which had not been done since Ted Williams in 1941. Gwynn Sr. was hitting .394 when the strike ended the season in August. Many people believe he would have hit the magical .400.

Gwynn Sr. finished his career with 3,141 hits. He won 8 batting titles (1984, 1987-1989, 1994-1997). Gwynn Sr. played in 15 All-Star Games. He won 5 Gold Gloves (1986-1987, 1989-1991). Gwynn Sr. has a career average of .338. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007. Gwynn Sr. is regarded as one of the greatest hitters in MLB history.
